Which lamp suits you? – The quick comparison
| Lamp | Ideal for |
|---|---|
| Outdoor wall light | Basic light on the house |
| String lights | Atmospheric evenings |
| Outdoor spotlight / floodlight | Large areas, many guests |
| Recessed spotlight (ceiling/floor) | Covered terraces, paths |
The right lamps for your terrace
Outdoor wall lights on the house or terrace wall provide even basic lighting while simultaneously setting an architectural accent. → To outdoor wall lights
String lights stretched over the terrace are the quickest way to achieve a magical mood – warm white light and the terrace is instantly transformed into a special place. Especially beautiful in vintage or country house styles. → To string lights & decor
Outdoor spotlights & floodlights illuminate larger terrace areas brightly and evenly – ideal for evenings with many guests or as security lighting. However, overly bright light can quickly make a terrace feel uncomfortable: outdoor spotlights are best used when a large area truly needs to be illuminated, less as a standard solution for every terrace. → To outdoor spotlights
Recessed spotlights are suitable for covered terrace areas under a canopy or pergola, such as the 9-piece set of dimmable IP44 recessed spotlights in warm white or the 6-piece set of dimmable IP44 recessed spotlights in matte silver. For paths and transitions, the walk-over IP66 recessed floor spotlight in blue, 6-piece set is also suitable. → To outdoor ceiling lights
Decorative accents can also be provided by the BALI 21 outdoor boho-style table lamp as well as a clear glass tealight holder for atmospheric candlelight on the terrace table.
Lighting design for the terrace – how to succeed
Combine layers: The most beautiful terrace lighting is created from several light sources at different heights – wall lights as basic lighting, string lights as mood lighting, and floor lights or path lights as accents. → To path lights
Observe protection class: All terrace lights must be weatherproof – at least IP44 for covered areas, IP65 or higher for unprotected outdoor areas and recessed floor lights.
Warm white for atmosphere: On the terrace, warm white light (2,700–3,000 K) is the most inviting – it is reminiscent of candlelight and creates a relaxed evening mood.
Lighting for pergolas and terrace covers
Several solutions are suitable for pergolas and terrace covers: recessed spotlights in the roof provide even basic lighting, such as the 3-piece set of mini recessed spotlights in matte nickel. Pendant lights create a decorative focal point on the pergola, and LED strips along the beams or rafters produce a soft, indirect ambient light.
Bright light at the barbecue area
When grilling, it is not just about mood, but above all about good visibility: an additional, targeted spotlight or a bright wall light directly above the grill ensures that meat and vegetables remain clearly visible even after dark.
Light at the terrace dining table
The terrace dining table deserves its own targeted light source – such as a pendant light, a string of lights stretched directly above it, or a tealight holder on the table itself. This keeps the dining area usable after sunset without having to brightly illuminate the entire terrace.
Glare-free: Especially when sitting, glare-free light is important so that lights do not shine directly into the field of vision and disturb the cozy evening.
Putting plants in the spotlight
Potted plants, olive trees, or palms look particularly impressive with floor spotlights or indirect light, casting interesting shadows on the wall or floor.
Atmospherically lighting privacy screens
LED strips behind wooden slats or hedges highlight the privacy screen itself and create a soft, indirect light without affecting privacy.
How many lumens does my terrace need?
| Area | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Mood light | 100–300 lm |
| Seating & dining area | 300–600 lm |
| Large terrace / many guests | 800–1,500 lm |
Materials
Aluminum and stainless steel are particularly weather-resistant and are suitable for terrace lamps permanently exposed to the elements. Glass is frequently used for tealight holders and covers. For a natural, decorative look, boho models such as the BALI table lamp are also suitable.
Think cordless: Where there is no power outlet on the terrace, battery-powered lamps are currently the most practical solution. We are also expanding our range of solar lights – feel free to check our Solar lights category as soon as the first models are available.
Smart Home: Smart terrace lights turn on automatically at dusk and can be controlled via app or voice. Scenes like "Dinner outside" or "Party light" at the touch of a button – compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit. Often, a smart bulb in an existing lamp is enough to get started.
Choose a style: From modern to Scandinavian or Mediterranean – let the terrace lighting match the interior and architecture of the house.

Frequently asked questions
What IP protection rating does a terrace light need?
For covered areas, IP44 is usually sufficient. For unprotected outdoor areas and recessed floor lights, IP65 or higher is recommended.
How do I combine several light sources on the terrace?
The best way is to combine wall lights as basic lighting, string lights as mood lighting, and floor or path lights as an additional accent at different heights.
What do I do if there is no power outlet on the terrace?
Battery-powered lamps are currently the most practical cordless solution. We are also expanding our range of solar lights – check our solar lights category to stay informed.
How many lumens do I need for my terrace?
For pure mood lighting, 100–300 lumens are sufficient, for the seating and dining area 300–600 lumens, and for larger terraces with many guests, 800–1,500 lumens.
Are recessed floor spotlights suitable for the terrace?
Yes, especially for paths and transitions. Ensure a high protection rating such as IP65 or IP66, as these lights are permanently exposed to moisture and mechanical stress.
