Which path light is right for you?

Bollard lights with an up-down effect are electrically operated, hot-dip galvanized pedestal lights that are either installed directly into the ground or set up on surfaces. They emit light both upwards and downwards and are ideal for the permanent lighting of driveways or garden paths, such as the classic white pedestal light in lantern design with E27 socket.

Garden lanterns with ground spikes, by contrast, are purely decorative lanterns without a fixed power connection: they are inserted into the flower bed using a 130 cm rod and fitted with an LED candle or a tea light, such as the garden lantern with ground spike in chrome and clear glass, the garden lantern with ground spike in black and frosted glass, or the garden lantern with ground spike in chrome and frosted glass. They also serve well as discreet grave lights in a cemetery.

For a playful, colorful accent, the 30 cm RGB globe light with ground spike and remote control provides the perfect solution – ideal for illuminating garden beds or lawn areas in changing colors.

Where are path lights particularly suitable?

Besides the garden, terrace, and driveway, our path lights are also suitable for sidewalks, front gardens, home entrances, courtyards, and access roads. Robust bollard lights also provide reliable orientation for larger outdoor facilities such as hotel grounds, parks, corporate premises, or public pathways.

What you should consider before buying

Protection class (IP rating): Electrically operated bollard lights for outdoor use require at least IP44. Our garden lanterns with ground spikes are designed for tea lights or LED candles and do not require a power connection.

Distances & quantity: As a rule of thumb, bollard lights should be placed every 2–3 meters to achieve uniform illumination without dark gaps.

Light color: Warm white light (2,700–3,000 K) appears natural and cozy in the garden. Neutral white light (4,000 K) is brighter and better suited for safety-relevant areas like driveways.

Illuminant: Some bollard lights use GU10 bulbs or E27 bulbs, while others have an integrated LED. LED versions are the most economical choice for permanent outdoor lighting.

How many lumens do I need?

How tall should my bollard light be?

Low bollard lights around 40 cm create subtle accents along flower beds and narrow garden paths without obstructing the view. Models around 60 cm are suitable for most garden paths and provide a good balance between visibility and illumination. Taller bollard lights around 80 cm ensure a more generous light distribution, for example along a driveway. From 100 cm upwards, bollard lights look almost like small pole lights and are suitable for wider paths or representative entrance areas.

Materials

Hot-dip galvanized metal is particularly weather-resistant and rust-proof, as is the case with our up-down pedestal lights. Chrome and glass, conversely, characterize our decorative garden lanterns. Aluminum and stainless steel are generally among the most durable materials for garden and path areas, as they neither rust nor fade.

Color Rendering (CRI)

For paths and orientation lighting, a color rendering index of Ra 80 is usually sufficient. Those who wish to illuminate plants and garden details as naturally as possible will benefit from a higher color rendering.

Motion sensors for bollard lights

Bollard lights with motion sensors switch on automatically as soon as someone approaches, thus increasing safety and comfort along paths and driveways. We do not carry such models in our current range of path lights – our bollard lights are operated conventionally via a switch.

Smart home-capable path lights

Many users are looking for path lights with Zigbee, Wi-Fi, app, or Alexa connectivity to switch garden lighting via timers or voice commands. We do not currently carry such smart models in our assortment. Anyone looking for a smart solution can use a smart LED bulb in models with replaceable illuminants.

Why LED path lights?

LED path lights have almost completely replaced classic halogen or incandescent models in garden and path areas today. They are energy-efficient, particularly durable, and weather-resistant, which is crucial for year-round outdoor use. At the same time, they reach their full brightness immediately and are therefore very low-maintenance.

Which path light suits your interior style?

For modern gardens, clean, reduced shapes without playful details are suitable. The country house style harmonizes well with our decorative garden lanterns, while the industrial style is better suited to functional, robust bollard lights. Minimalist garden design benefits from unobtrusive, simple lights that blend subtly into the overall design.

Bollard light or outdoor wall light?

Bollard lights are particularly suitable for low-level orientation along paths and in the garden, while outdoor wall lights provide additional accent lighting on the facade or at the house entrance. Many customers combine both systems for a well-thought-out overall concept.
