Kitchen lighting planning – how to get it right

Separate task lighting from mood lighting: Plan at least two independent lighting circuits – one for bright task light (stove, cutting board, sink) and one for dimmed mood light for dining or social moments.

Color temperature: Neutral white light (4,000 K) is ideal for kitchen work areas, as it reproduces colors true to nature and promotes concentration. Above the dining table, it can be warmer white.

Avoiding shadows on the countertop

Ceiling lights alone are often not enough. Under-cabinet lights prevent your body from casting shadows on the countertop while you work – this is immediately noticeable, especially when chopping or cooking. A combination of ceiling lighting for base brightness and under-cabinet lights for the work surface provides the most reliable, shadow-free illumination.

Kitchen island lighting

For medium-sized kitchen islands, two pendant lights are usually suitable; for longer islands or counters, three may be used. A good guideline for the spacing between the lights is about 60–75 cm, with the lights centered over the work or seating area. The hanging height is usually 70–80 cm above the countertop so that the lights neither glare nor obstruct the view while working or having conversations across the counter.

Lighting in an open-plan kitchen

In open-plan kitchens, the lighting for the kitchen and living area should match harmoniously. Functional task lighting in the kitchen and cozier mood lighting in the adjacent living area can be well connected via separate but stylistically coordinated lighting circuits, making the entire space feel like one cohesive unit.

Glare-free light in the kitchen

Matte covers, LEDs recessed deep into the fixture, and indirect light reflected off the ceiling or wall significantly reduce glare – especially important directly over work surfaces and at the dining table, where you frequently look toward the light source.

Cleaning & care

Smooth metal and glass surfaces are easier to clean from grease and steam than textured fabric surfaces – an aspect that pays off when choosing the right kitchen light, especially near the stove.

How many lumens does my kitchen need?

Color rendering (CRI)

In the kitchen, it is worth looking at the color rendering index: With Ra 90, food looks much more natural when being chopped and plated than with simple standard bulbs, as with the square LED panel recessed spot with 4,000 K neutral white.

Protection rating: Where do I need IP44?

Near the sink, cooktop, or splash zones, at least an IP44 protection rating is recommended, such as with the round IP44 recessed spotlight from Paulmann or the 6-piece set of IP44 recessed and surface-mounted aluminum spots. Away from splash zones, the standard IP20 protection rating is usually sufficient.

Light sources: In the kitchen, GU10 bulbs are often used for recessed spotlights and E27 bulbs for pendant lights.

Materials

Metal, such as aluminum or stainless steel, provides clean, modern lines and is particularly durable – remaining resistant to heat and moisture even near the kitchen. Glass adds lightness and light reflections, as seen in the Titanic pendant light. Plastic is primarily found in budget-conscious recessed spotlight sets.

Choosing a style: Whether modern, industrial, or Scandinavian – the kitchen light should complement the overall decor.

Smart Home: In the kitchen, smart lighting scores points for flexibility: bright task light while cooking, warmer light while eating – automatically or via an app. Smart GU10 bulbs in existing spots are often the easiest way to start, without any new wiring.
