Lighting planning for the garden – how it works

Divide into zones: Plan your garden lighting in areas – paths & safety, accent lighting for plants, and decorative lighting for seating areas. Each zone has different requirements for brightness and light color.

Protection class: All garden lights must be weather-resistant. IP44 is sufficient for normal outdoor areas; IP65 or IP67 is recommended for lights close to the ground or installed in the soil.

Lighting trees correctly

For a particularly impressive effect, you should illuminate trees from below rather than frontally. A slightly offset position for the spotlight also creates interesting shadow plays in the foliage and looks more natural than direct, centered illumination.

Pond lighting

An illuminated garden pond becomes a real eye-catcher in the evening. Spotlights at the edge of the pond that shine slightly into the water create charming light reflections on the surface. When choosing pond lighting, pay particular attention to a high protection class, as the lights are constantly exposed to high humidity.

Illuminating garden paths correctly

Do not set bollard lights at uniform one-meter intervals, but rather slightly staggered along the path – this looks more natural and avoids a regular, technical-looking row of lights. A rough guideline is spacing of about 2–3 meters, adjusted to the individual path layout.

Glare-free: Do not point garden lights directly into seating areas so that no one is blinded while relaxing in the garden.

Lighting by season

In summer, accent lighting usually takes center stage – trees, flower beds, and seating areas are atmospherically showcased. In winter, when it gets dark earlier, the focus shifts more towards safety lighting, such as along paths and at the house entrance.

Illuminating a garden house

On the garden house, a robust outdoor wall light provides reliable light for getting tools in the evening or acts as subtle facade lighting that makes the garden house visible even after dark.

Illuminating hedges

Spotlights positioned from below along a hedge impressively highlight the structure of the plants while creating a natural, opaque light boundary to the neighboring property.

How many lumens does my garden need?

Materials

Stainless steel and aluminum are particularly weather-resistant and do not rust – ideal for lights that are permanently exposed to the elements, such as the stainless steel recessed ground spotlight. Plastic is primarily used for budget-conscious models.

Light color: Warm white light (2,700–3,000 K) appears natural and harmonizes well with plants and wood. For safety areas such as paths and driveways, it can be a bit brighter and more neutral, as with the Tulo C wall-recessed light with neutral white light.

Motion sensors: We do not carry any models with integrated motion sensors in our current garden lighting range. However, an existing garden light can be retrofitted with automatic switching using a separate PIR motion sensor module.

Light sources: E27 bulbs for path lights and GU10 bulbs for spotlights are frequently used in the garden – in LED versions for maximum longevity.

Smart Home: Smart garden lighting controls itself – dusk-to-dawn switches and schedules ensure that the right light is always on. With suitable smart light sources or control systems, many garden lights can be integrated into smart home systems such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home.
