Lighting design for the hallway – how to do it right

Retrofitting motion control: Automatic switching is particularly practical for trips through the hallway at night. With a separate motion sensor module, an existing hallway light can be retrofitted so that it switches on and off automatically.

Brightness & color temperature: The hallway should be bright enough to navigate safely. Warm white (approx. 2,700–3,000 K) is suitable for cozy entrance areas, neutral white (approx. 3,500–4,000 K) for particularly clear orientation, such as in long or darker hallways.

Illuminating long hallways evenly

In long hallways, rely on several recessed spotlights or ceiling lights instead of a single light source. Ensure even spacing between the lights to avoid dark gaps or isolated pools of light – this way, the entire hallway appears consistently bright rather than patchily lit.

Light in the cloakroom area

Additional, targeted light is worthwhile in the cloakroom area: above the mirror for a final look before leaving the apartment, above the coat rack so that items of clothing can be easily found, as well as by the shoe cabinet or shelf for a better overview when getting dressed.

In an entrance area with stairs, a combination of ambient light in the hallway and additional lighting along the staircase is recommended so that the transition between levels remains safe and clearly visible.

How many lumens does my hallway need?

Color rendering (CRI)

A color rendering index of Ra 80 is usually sufficient for the hallway. If there is a mirror in the entrance area for a final look before leaving the house, a model with Ra 90 or higher is worthwhile.

Materials

Metal is one of the most common materials for hallway lights and ensures a durable, easy-care appearance. Glass provides additional light reflections, as seen in the TITANIC pendant light. Aluminum is primarily found in modern recessed spotlight sets.

Bulbs: E27 bulbs or GU10 bulbs are often used in the hallway. LED variants are particularly sensible here, as they remain durable even with frequent switching on and off.
