Lighting design for your balcony – here is how it works

Consider the protection rating: All balcony lights must be weatherproof – at least IP44 for covered areas, and IP65 for unprotected outdoor areas.

Atmospheric light instead of floodlight: On a balcony, it's all about the atmosphere. Warm white light (2,700–3,000 K), dimmability, and multiple small light sources are better than a single bright light.

Balcony lighting without drilling

Many balcony owners, especially those in rental apartments, are not allowed to drill or permanently mount anything. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives: battery-operated lights can be placed freely, string lights can simply be wrapped around the railing, and clamp lights can be attached to the railing or parapet without any drill holes. Highlighting privacy screens & plants

Light placed behind plants or a privacy screen creates particularly atmospheric, indirect lighting without the light source itself being visible. Plants like olive trees, lavender, or bamboo look especially beautiful with warm accent light and cast interesting shadows on the wall.

Properly lighting small balconies

On small balconies, lighting on the wall is better than on the floor as it takes up less floor space. Indirect light makes the space appear larger. You should avoid large, space-consuming floor lamps in small areas so as not to clutter the balcony further.

Wind: Lightweight decorative lights should be secured against wind so they do not tip over or fall – checking stability is especially worthwhile for free-standing models on higher balconies.

Consideration for neighbors: Do not point direct light toward neighboring balconies to avoid blinding or disturbing anyone – a small but important practical tip, especially in densely built-up residential areas.

Aluminum and stainless steel are particularly weather-resistant and are suitable for balcony lights that are permanently exposed to the elements, such as the recessed floor spotlight.
