Bathroom lighting planning – how to succeed

Note protection classes: Specific protection zones apply in the bathroom. Directly above the tub or shower (Zone 1), IP44 is mandatory; inside the shower itself (Zone 0), IP67 is required. Outside of wet areas, IP20 is sufficient.

Plan two lighting circuits: Bright mirror light (neutral white, 4,000 K) for the morning and dimmed ambient light (warm white, 2,700 K) for relaxing evenings – this is the ideal bathroom lighting concept.

How to properly light my mirror?

Side lights to the left and right of the mirror provide particularly shadow-free, even illumination of the face. A single light placed only above the mirror, however, casts more shadows under the eyes and nose, which makes makeup application and shaving more difficult. Where possible, the combination of side lighting and a light above the mirror is the best solution.

Mirror size: If possible, the mirror light should be about as wide as the mirror or at least illuminate the face area evenly so that no dark edges are created.

Lighting based on bathroom size

In a guest toilet, a single, well-positioned light above or next to the mirror is usually sufficient. In a family bathroom, several light zones are recommended – such as mirror light, general lighting from the ceiling, and possibly additional light above the shower. In a wellness bathroom, indirect light, such as from LED strips or dimmable wall lights, rounds off the relaxing atmosphere.

Glare-free: Pay particular attention to glare-free light, especially with mirrors, high-gloss tiles, and glass surfaces, as these surfaces easily enhance reflections.

How many lumens does my bathroom need?

Color rendering (CRI)

For makeup and shaving, mirror lights with a color rendering index of Ra 90 or higher are recommended so that skin tone and colors appear natural. For general lighting, Ra 80 is usually sufficient.

Materials

Aluminum and metal are among the most durable materials for the damp bathroom area, as they do not rust. Glass provides additional light reflections, as seen in the long LED bathroom lamp. Acrylic is found primarily in lightweight, modern diffuser covers.
