Warm white, neutral white, cool white – you encounter these terms everywhere when buying a new lamp. But what do they actually mean, and why does the light color make such a big difference in a room?
What is light color anyway?
Light color is measured in Kelvin (K) and describes whether the light appears warm and cozy or cold and clear. This has nothing to do with brightness – a warm white lamp can be just as bright as a cool white one. It is purely about the mood the light creates in the room.
As a rule of thumb: the lower the Kelvin value, the warmer and more yellowish the light. The higher the value, the colder and clearer it is.
Warm white – when you want it to be cozy
Warm white light is between 2700K and 3000K and is reminiscent of the soft light of a classic light bulb. It appears inviting, relaxing, and creates a pleasant atmosphere – exactly what you need at home after a long day.
Warm white light almost always looks good in the living room, bedroom, or dining room. It makes people and rooms appear in a friendly, natural light.
Neutral white – the all-rounder
Neutral white light is between 3500K and 4000K and is neither too warm nor too cold. It appears fresh and clear without feeling uncomfortable – and helps support concentration.
The kitchen, bathroom, or study are classic areas for neutral white light. If you are not sure which light color might fit, you can rarely go wrong with neutral white.
Cool white – for maximum clarity
Cool light from 5500K upwards is very bright and clear. It has an activating effect and ensures that details are easily recognized. In living spaces, however, it can quickly feel uncomfortable – which is why it is more suitable for garages, workshops, or commercial areas.
Can you mix different light colors?
Yes – but with care. Too many different light colors in one room can quickly feel restless. What works well: warm white ambient light combined with a neutral white task light over the desk or kitchen island. This way, you get the best of both worlds.
