Adjusting the brightness in a room flexibly – bright and focused in the morning, warm and cozy in the evening. That sounds simple, but there are a few things to consider in practice. Because not every LED lamp is dimmable – and not every dimmer works with LEDs.
Not every LED is dimmable
This is the most common misconception when buying: Many think that all LED lamps can be dimmed. Unfortunately, that is not true. The packaging must explicitly state "dimmable" – if this note is missing, the lamp will flicker when connected to a dimmer or will not work at all.
It is therefore worth taking a quick look at the packaging before purchasing. This one second saves a lot of trouble later on.
Not every dimmer works with LEDs
Anyone who still has an older dimmer at home should be careful. Most older dimmers were developed for classic light bulbs and are simply not compatible with modern LED lamps. An LED-compatible dimmer is therefore just as important as the right lamp.
A little practical tip: buying the dimmer and light source from the same manufacturer significantly increases compatibility and ensures a steady, calm dimming result.
Minimum load and maximum load – what does that mean?
Every dimmer has an operating range – a minimum and a maximum load. LED lamps consume very little electricity, sometimes too little for older dimmers. The result: the lamp flickers or cannot be dimmed completely.
Those who operate several lamps on one dimmer have this problem less often – because together they reach the required minimum load more easily.
Why is my lamp flickering?
Flickering is the most common problem when dimming – and it almost always has a simple reason. Either the lamp is not suitable for operation with a dimmer, the dimmer is not LED-compatible, or the lamp and dimmer simply do not go together. In most cases, replacing one of the two products solves the problem immediately.
How to make dimming work
The rule is simple: buy a dimmable lamp, use an LED-compatible dimmer, and pay attention to the load specifications. Anyone who follows these three points will enjoy atmospheric light without compromises.
