At the mirror: the most important light source in the bathroom
The most common mistake in the bathroom: a ceiling light above the mirror. The light comes from above, casting shadows under the eyes, nose, and chin—making applying makeup or shaving a chore. The result always looks different in daylight than expected.
The right solution is two wall lights on the sides of the mirror, mounted at eye level. This illuminates the face evenly and without shadows. If you don't have space for side wall lights, choose a mirror with integrated LED lighting—many modern models already have this built-in.
For mirror lighting, the rule is: neutral white between 3500K and 4000K, with a CRI value over 90. This means: colors are rendered naturally—what you see in the bathroom looks exactly the same outside in daylight.
On the ceiling: ambient light that doesn't distract
Ceiling lighting in the bathroom does not require high output—250 to 300 lumens per square meter are sufficient for orientation and general brightness. Recessed spotlights or a flat ceiling light distribute light evenly throughout the room without glare.
Important: The ceiling light must be dimmable. In the evening, when you want to take a relaxing bath, no one needs 300 lumens from the ceiling. Dimmed to 20 to 30 percent, the bathroom transforms instantly.
By the bathtub: where the spa feeling is created
The difference between a normal bathroom and a true moment of well-being is often just a single light source: warm, indirect light near the bathtub. An LED strip behind the tub, a dimmable wall light in the corner, or indirect lighting behind a shelf—the light source itself is not visible, only its soft glow on the wall.
For this area, the rule applies: as warm as possible, between 2700K and 3000K. This is the light that truly helps you unwind.
Different in the morning than in the evening
The bathroom is the only room we spend time in both in the morning and in the evening—with completely different needs. In the morning, we need bright, clear light to wake up and get ready. In the evening, we need warm, dimmed light to wind down.
The most elegant solution: dimmable lights with adjustable light color. In the morning, set to 4000K and full brightness; in the evening, to 2700K and 30 percent. Once you have that, you won't want to go back.
