Constant Current LED Driver – precise power supply for your LEDs
Constant current drivers supply LED modules with a precisely regulated current in milliamperes – regardless of voltage or load. This protects your LEDs from overloading, ensures uniform brightness, and significantly extends their lifespan. Suitable for compact recessed lights as well as for professional LED spotlights and architectural lighting.
Which current value is right for you? – A quick comparison
| Current value | Ideal for |
|---|---|
| 150mA / 300mA | Small LED modules, decorative lighting |
| 350mA | The most common value – LED modules, downlights, recessed lights |
| 500mA / 700mA | Higher-power systems, commercial & object lighting |
| 1050mA | High-power LED modules, high light requirements |
The right solution for your setup
150mA & 300mA are suitable for small LED modules, decorative lighting, and compact LED spots, such as the 300mA replacement driver with 3 watts for 6–12V systems.
350mA is the most sought-after value: ideal for many LED modules, downlights, and recessed lights. If you are unsure, this is the most likely match – for example with the dimmable 350mA driver with 20 watts and triac dimming interface or the dimmable, round 350mA driver with IP65 rating.
500mA & 700mA are suitable for more powerful LED systems, professional recessed lights, and LED spotlights in the commercial and object sector, such as the dimmable 500mA driver with 16 watts and TRIAC interface, the 500mA driver with dot-dash connector for table and floor lamps, or the compact 700mA mini-driver for 1–2 LED modules of 3 watts each.
1050mA is suitable for high-power LED modules and demanding installations with high light requirements, such as the 1050mA driver with 45 watts for LED panels.
For dimmable installations, the dimmable 24V driver with 50 watts for leading-edge and trailing-edge dimming is also suitable, as is the 35-watt driver that provides either constant current or constant voltage.
We carry drivers from Eaglerise, Relco, SELF Electronics, Malmbergs, and Hoshingmei – reliable manufacturers used worldwide in LED luminaires.
What you should consider before buying
Three values must be correct: the constant current value in mA (must match the LED module exactly), the power in watts (must be able to supply the connected LEDs), and the driver's output voltage range. Do you need dimmability? Then pay attention to the interface – common types are leading-edge, trailing-edge, 0–10V, and DALI. You can find suitable dimmers in our dimmer collection.
Constant current or constant voltage? LED modules require constant current (mA). LED strips require constant voltage (12V or 24V) – for this, we have our constant voltage LED power supplies. Using the wrong driver can permanently damage LEDs – if in doubt, feel free to ask. For low-voltage halogen systems, please check our halogen transformer collection.
Why is there a voltage range on the driver?
A constant current driver regulates the current automatically. Within the specified range (e.g., 18–32V), the voltage adapts to the connected LED module. You do not need to know the exact voltage of your LED module as long as it is within the stated range – the most important thing is that the current value in mA matches.
Connection types
LED drivers are supplied with various connection types: open wire ends for free wiring, connectors for tool-free connection, mini-AMP connectors for furniture lighting, and the dot-dash connector as used in many Sompex table and floor lamps. Ensure that the connection type of your LED module matches that of the driver.
Correct polarity
Ensure that the positive and negative terminals match those of the original driver – incorrect polarity can permanently damage the connected LED module.
Replacing an old driver
If your LED driver is defective, take a look at the original component. You should look for: the current value in mA, the wattage, the output voltage range, and the existing connection type. If these four details match, you can generally find a suitable replacement driver, even if the exact original model is no longer available.
CE marking
When purchasing, look for a CE marking, which confirms that the driver meets the applicable European safety requirements.
Common selection errors
Wrong current value: A driver with a different mA rating can under- or over-supply LEDs and permanently damage them. Insufficient power: If the wattage is insufficient for the connected LED modules, flickering or failure will occur. Wrong dimming interface: A driver without a suitable dimming interface (leading-edge/trailing-edge, 0–10V, DALI) cannot be dimmed as desired. Confusion with constant voltage: A constant current driver is not suitable for constant voltage LED strips and vice versa.
Plan for a power buffer
An LED driver should not be operated continuously at 100% of its rated power. Plan for a power reserve of about 10–20% so that the driver does not operate at its load limit; this protects the component and noticeably extends its service life.
IP ratings for LED drivers
IP20 is suitable for indoor use in dry rooms only. IP65 is required if the driver is exposed to moisture, such as in damp rooms or outdoor installations, as with the previously mentioned IP65-rated 350mA driver.
Personal lighting advice in our Wuppertal showroom
Not sure which driver fits your lamp? We can help you at our showroom in Wuppertal-Vohwinkel – simply bring the old driver or the luminaire model name with you.
Located between Düsseldorf, Cologne, Essen, and Dortmund – in the heart of the Bergisches Land region – you will find our lamp store in Wuppertal. Many customers visit us specifically because they are looking for a local lamp store and want to discuss the right driver in person before purchasing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between constant current and constant voltage?
A constant current driver provides a fixed current in milliamperes and is used for individual LED modules. A constant voltage power supply, on the other hand, provides a fixed voltage (12V or 24V) and is particularly suitable for LED strips.
Which mA value do I need?
The required value is usually printed on the LED module or the defective original driver. 350mA is the most commonly required value for recessed lights and downlights.
Can I use a 700mA driver for a 350mA LED module?
No, the current value must match the LED module exactly. An excessively high current value can permanently damage the LEDs.
What dimming interfaces are available for LED drivers?
Common types include leading-edge, trailing-edge, 0–10V, and DALI. Make sure that the driver and the dimmer used support the same interface.
Which IP rating do I need for my LED driver?
IP20 is sufficient for purely indoor use. If the driver is exposed to moisture, for example in outdoor areas or damp rooms, an IP65 rating or higher is required.
