Lighting planning: How many recessed spotlights do I need?

For a rough estimate, you can work with general thumb rules for the required luminous flux per square meter. These values are only for orientation and are not equivalent to a professional lux calculation on the usable surface.

The simple rule of thumb is: room area × guide value in lm/m² = approximate total luminous flux required. With LED spots providing about 500 lumens per spot, the following orders of magnitude arise, for example:

On the spacing of the spots: A rigid rule such as 80–100 cm does not suit every light. Sensible spacing depends primarily on ceiling height, beam angle, luminous flux, and the desired uniformity. Plan the spots so that the light cones overlap logically and important areas are not left in the shade.

The actual number of LED recessed spotlights required also depends on room colors, furniture, daylight, other light sources, and the desired lighting effect. Additional, targeted lighting is usually advisable for work surfaces, mirrors, or the dining table.
