A new lampshade can completely transform a light. However, for a replacement shade to not only look good but also sit securely and straight, there is more to consider than just color and size. The mounting type, ring aperture, and the position of the fixture are particularly decisive. E14 or E27 alone are not always sufficient for selection.

Which lampshade fits my light?
Start with the mounting of your existing shade. Check whether it is held in place by a ring fitting on the socket, clamped directly onto a suitable bulb, or attached using a special holder. Only when this system matches the new shade should you choose the shape, material, and color.
The position of the fixture is also important. It can be located near the top or bottom edge of the shade or recessed further into the shade. Two shades with the same external dimensions can therefore sit very differently on the same light.
The safest approach is to take photos of the old lampshade and its mounting from above and below before disassembly. An additional photo of the fixture with a ruler or caliper will make later comparison easier.
E14 or E27 – what does this mean for a lampshade?
E14 and E27 originally denote the sizes of the Edison screw threads for bulbs and sockets. In retail, these specifications are also used for lampshades. In this context, they indicate the socket and mounting size for which the shade’s ring aperture is intended.
Important: A ring aperture labeled as E27 is not simply an opening of 27 mm. Likewise, E14 on a lampshade does not automatically mean 14 mm. The actual opening depends on the shade's construction and the intended socket.
Use E14 or E27 for your initial selection, but also measure the existing ring aperture and compare it with the technical specifications of the replacement shade.
Distinguishing correctly between the ring aperture and socket ring
The ring aperture is the central opening or the mounting ring within the lampshade. The socket ring or screw ring, on the other hand, sits on the designated socket and holds the shade in position.
With this common mounting method, the socket ring is loosened, the shade's ring aperture is placed onto the intended support, and then secured with the ring. The bulb does not hold the shade in place. Depending on the socket, there may be one or two rings or other holding elements. Therefore, the existing construction should always be examined closely.
E27 to E14 – when does an adapter ring help?
A lampshade with a larger E27 ring aperture can often be used on an E14 socket in systems designed for it by using a suitable reducer or adapter ring. The adapter is inserted into the larger aperture and reduces the usable opening.
However, an adapter ring does not solve every compatibility issue. It neither changes the position of the fixture nor the mounting type, the size of the shade, or the space available for the bulb. Also, check the product description to see if the appropriate adapter is included or needs to be purchased separately.
Conversely, a shade with a small E14 ring aperture usually cannot be adapted to a larger E27 socket using a simple reducer ring. A small opening cannot be enlarged by a reducer ring. Do not drill out the ring and do not force it over the socket.
What other mounting types are there?
Clamp-on or clip-on shade: With this construction, a spring-loaded holder sits directly on a suitable bulb. Therefore, not only must the E14 or E27 match, but the shape and size of the bulb must also fit the clip. A clamp-on shade is not a universal system.
Bracket or spider: Several metal struts connect the shade frame to a central mount. However, the struts alone do not indicate how the shade is attached to the light. The construction of the central mount is the deciding factor. The claim that every spider is simply placed over the bulb is therefore incorrect.
Special mountings: Some shades, glass components, or diffusers are attached via a screw thread, side retaining screws, a clamping ring, or a special twist connection. For such models, the dimensions and construction must exactly match the light. For imported or older lights, special systems such as harps and finials may also be present.
For an unusual mounting, an original replacement shade based on the manufacturer, model, or article number is often the safest choice.

Mounting at the top or bottom – why is this important?
This specification describes where the ring aperture or the inner support is located within the lampshade. It can be near the top or bottom edge or recessed into the shade.
This position cannot be reliably determined from the type of light alone. Not every table lamp shade has the same bottom mount, and not every pendant shade has the same top mount. A different position changes the height of the shade on the light, the position of the bulb, its visibility, and the distance to the shade material.
Therefore, compare not only the ring aperture but also the side and installation depth of the fixture with the old shade.
What dimensions do I need?
Measure the existing shade as completely as possible:
Top diameter: External dimension at the top edge of the shade.
Bottom diameter: External dimension at the bottom edge of the shade.
Height: Vertical measurement of the lampshade.
Ring aperture: Inner diameter of the actual mounting opening – do not infer this from E14 or E27.
Fixture position: Fixture at the top or bottom, as well as its distance to the respective shade edge.
Width and depth: For oval, rectangular, or square shades, record both dimensions.
Additionally, check the shape, the mounting type, and the free space for the bulb. The bulb must fit into the shade without hitting the shade material.
Changing a lampshade safely – step by step
1. Turn off the light: For table and floor lamps, unplug the power cord as well.
2. Allow to cool: Wait until the bulb and all components have cooled down completely.
3. Check the mounting: Look closely to see if the shade is held by a socket ring, clip, screws, or another system.
4. Remove the old shade: Loosen only the intended mechanical mounting. Remove the bulb only if necessary for the construction. Do not use force.
5. Mount the new shade: Insert it straight and tighten the ring or holder only until the shade is secure and stable.
6. Final check: Check the distance to the bulb and observe the specifications of the light and shade regarding bulb size, maximum wattage, and installation orientation.
Changing a removable lampshade is not electrical work. As soon as it would be necessary to dismantle or change the socket, wiring, or electrical connections, the normal shade change ends.
Which size looks good?
There are various design rules of thumb for harmonious proportions. However, these are only for orientation and are not a technical compatibility rule. For a replacement, the existing lampshade is usually the best starting point.
Mounting, stability, socket position, and sufficient space around the bulb always take priority. Only then should you decide whether a slightly wider, taller, or differently shaped shade fits better with your lamp base and decor.
How do material and color influence the light?
The light effect depends not only on the material but also on the color, material thickness, inner lining, transparency, and shape of the shade.
Fabric and paper: Light-colored, translucent versions can let light pass through the sides and diffuse it. Dense or dark variants often direct more light through the open sides.
Glass and plastic: Both materials can be clear, textured, satin, opal, or completely opaque. Their light effect cannot be determined by the material name alone.
Metal: A closed metal shade is not translucent and limits lateral light output. The light is directed mainly via the open areas or reflected on the inside.
A dark or largely opaque shade can emit significantly less lateral light with the same bulb than a light, translucent shade.

Do not choose a replacement lampshade based solely on E14 or E27. First, check the mounting type, measure the ring aperture, and check where the fixture is located in the shade. Then compare external dimensions, shape, and the available space for the bulb. Only when technical compatibility is correct should you consider material, color, and design.

Can an E14 shade fit on an E27 socket?

How do I measure the ring aperture?
Measure the inner diameter of the actual mounting opening directly on the metal or plastic ring. Do not simply derive the dimension from E14 or E27.
Can I use any shade for table and pendant lamps?

Why is the new lampshade sitting crooked?
Possibly the ring aperture is not sitting flat, the socket or adapter ring is tilted, the inner struts are warped, or the shade is intended for a different mounting. Do not tighten an unsuitable shade by force.
Is the lampshade allowed to touch the bulb?
The shade material should not touch the bulb unless the manufacturer explicitly indicates a construction designed for this. LED bulbs also generate heat.
